Acupuncture is an ancient healing modality in Chinese Medicine that dates back thousands of years. Traditional Chinese Medicine is based on an ancient philosophy that describes the universe and the body in terms of two opposing forces called yin and yang. When these forces are in balance, the body is healthy. Energy flows through the body along specific pathways, called meridians. If the flow of energy gets blocked, the disruption can cause pain, lack of function or illness. Acupuncture uses hair fine needles placed on specific anatomical points on the body to release these blockages and restore balance while stimulating the body’s natural self-healing process. Other modalities employed by an acupuncturist can include cupping, heat therapy, moxibustion, topical liniments, electro-stimulation of points, and herbal medicines.
